Cosmic radiation exposure in aviation comes from high-energy particles that originate in space and continually strike Earth. The atmosphere provides shielding, but at typical flight altitudes that shielding is much thinner, so the dose rate from cosmic radiation is higher than on the ground. The exposure increases with longer flight time and is greater on high-latitude (polar) routes because Earth's magnetic field offers less protection there.

Two groups are especially considered. Aircrew—pilots and cabin crew—are the main populations at risk because they accumulate exposure over many flights. Pregnant crew members are also given particular consideration due to potential sensitivity of a developing fetus, so exposure is managed to minimize risk. Passengers generally have much lower cumulative exposure, though those who fly very frequently will still accumulate some dose over time. Solar storms can temporarily raise exposure, prompting monitoring and potential route adjustments by airlines.
